Janet Barry, M.S.W., RSW

Social Worker and Psychotherapist

Janet received her Masters of Social Work from McGill University and her Bachelor of Social Work from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. Janet has been a Registered Social Worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers since 2002 and is a member of the Ontario Association of Social Workers. Janet’s previous employment has included being a Division Manager at Community Living Kingston and District; Trauma Counselling and Training at Ongwanada in Kingston; Queen’s University Developmental Disability Counselling Program; Coordinator and Social Worker for Family and Children’s Services in Napanee; Constituency Assistant for Leona Dombrowsky, MPP for Hastings, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington; and a long term Foster Parent.

Janet’s approach to treatment integrates therapies that include Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Trauma Informed Therapies, Life Coaching and Mindfulness.

Throughout her career Janet has worked for a variety of social service organizations and mental health providers. Her areas of strength include individual counselling and psychotherapy to address trauma, stress and anxiety, change and loss, strengthening relationships and enhancing existing life skills.  Having been a foster parent for more than 20 years she is aware of the challenges facing young people in foster care or transitioning to adult services.

Janet has studied and has a particular interest in the importance of trauma informed care/supports and has provided training and many presentations to staff and interested community groups on this topic.
